Introducing Carole Seawert, my guest blogger this month, enjoy!
“What you focus on, you get more of”
I’m a great believer in what you focus on, you get more of. I recently booked on Jo’s Sales Boosting Workshop because I hadn’t been working ON my business for a while and therefore it had gone through a quiet patch. In the four weeks between booking Jo’s course and turning up for the day, I had already won several copywriting projects.
A focus on new business
That wasn’t a coincidence. My focus had shifted to winning new projects and, even though I hadn’t actually gone out and done any sales calls or extra marketing activity, business had come my way.
On the day, Jo encouraged us to spend two one-hour slots each week working ON our business. She calls them Power Hours. So, last Monday, I sat down and did my Power Hour. In fact, it turned out to be a Power Afternoon as I really got into it. I had decided that my marketing push for September would be finding tone of voice projects.
Two projects materialise…
The next day, I was asked to take on a four-day web writing project. This call was totally out of the blue and not from any of the people I had contacted on Monday. The day after that, I was in a briefing meeting with a big media client to discuss their corporate brochure. I asked to see their tone of voice guidelines so I could have a clear steer on the style it needed to be written in. It turned out they didn’t have any. However, they knew they really should have these in place and so they asked me if I could do this as a separate project.
So, on Monday I had focused on getting tone of voice projects and by Wednesday I had one.
…then a third
The day after that (Thursday) I got a call to say that the in-house publication project that didn’t happen in the spring was now going ahead and could I write it in September?
…and a fourth
The day after that, I got an email saying could I please write four A4 brochures starting w/c August 26?
…and a fifth
The following week, I was in a meeting to discuss how we could progress a client’s blog between now and December. At the end of the meeting, I learned that the client needed my help with defining their tone of voice and this was a project they wanted to undertake in the autumn.
…and a sixth
The next day (which was yesterday) I was asked to quote for writing a 24 page brochure. It’s not a definite job until I get confirmation of the quote but it’s a client I’ve worked with a fair bit over the past few years. My focus is firmly on that they will accept my quote!
So, just over a week after I decided to focus on tone of voice projects, I already have two in the bag! And other projects are coming out of my ears…
Thank you, Jo, for introducing the concept of Power Hours! If you are looking to grow your business and haven’t yet been on Jo’s one-day Sales Boosting Workshop, I recommend you book yourself on it.
